Hospital with hospital church

The Heilig-Geist-Spital in Nördlingen is a former care center for the sick, old and poor. It was founded in the first half of the 13th century. From 1254 the hospital was under municipal administration. It was financed by a foundation of wealthy citizens. In terms of dimensions, the Nördlinger Spital was similar to the corresponding facility in Rothenburg ob der Tauber . Most of the buildings in Nördlingen's old town have been preserved and are now separated from Baldinger Straße into two approximately equal parts, the actual hospital with church and the commercial buildings.

Evangelical Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit

The hospital church was built soon after the facility was founded. In the years 1563 to 1564 the nave was extended. The installation of the square, octagonal tower at the top also took place in these years. The interior of the church is decorated with murals from the 14th century, which were only rediscovered in 1939. They depict passion scenes such as the depiction of Christ before Pilate, the flagellation, the carrying of the cross and the crucifixion. A fragment of an image of St. Christopher has also survived. The three-part top of a choir altar is an early Protestant type of altar. There are panel paintings by Hieronymus Wehinger (1578) between half-columns .

Hospital building

The hospital buildings were renovated in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today the Nördlinger Stadtmuseum is located in the main building . Adjacent buildings include the old brewery from 1534 and the former foundling house west of the church, which was built in the 18th century. Parts of the former hospital building still serve as a care facility today.

Farm buildings

The farm buildings of the former Heilig-Geist-Spital form a separate building complex, which is grouped around the hospital courtyard. This includes the Spitalmühle, a stately half-timbered building that shows a stone relief with the Mother of God and a kneeling man above a pointed arched door. Other buildings at the Spitalhof are a barn and the former Pfisterei.
