history

The council of Hanover founded the Hospital Sankt Spiritus in 1256 in order to take over social welfare services, which until then had been in the hands of the church. Since the city lacked the means for building, the Bishop of Minden called on the Hanoverian citizens to donate in letters of indulgence . Then the hospital could be built in the old town near the stone gate . The hospital included residential buildings, farm buildings, stables, a bakery and the Holy Spirit Church, which was built as a garrison church in 1656 (demolished in 1875). The city council was responsible for the administration of the facility from the start, and the committee within the monastery administration still includes councilors and city councilors of the city of Hanover. Initially, the hospital was endowed with land through donations, including by the Counts of Roden . The donations included, for example, the Gernandesburg and its nearby farm in today's Burg district by Duke Johann von Braunschweig-Lüneburg in 1274. From the 14th century, the hospital built its own economic base through financial transactions and the purchase of mills and property. Originally the institution was intended to care for the blind and lame as well as to accommodate strangers and travelers. From around 1300 the institution was converted into a nursing home. In the 17th and 18th centuries, around 50 people lived in the facility. From the middle of the 19th century, only women in need were accepted.

At the end of the 19th century the monastery was relocated from the old town. From 1892 to 1895, a new building in neo-Gothic style was built in today's Bult district according to plans by the architect Karl Börgemann , which is now a listed building. This increased the capacity to 200 people. After the Second World War , the monastery was operated as a nursing home again and from the 1970s it was converted into a nursing home for less well-off senior citizens.
