Local history museum - old weaver house

The Heimatmuseum - Altes Weberhaus is located in the municipality of Sohland an der Spree in the district of Bautzen and is operated by the municipality of Sohland an der Spree.

location

The museum is located below the former Lessing School on the right-hand side of the Sohlander Dorfbach in the listed building at Hainspacher Str. 19a in Obersohland.

building

The single-storey linen weaver's house, built around 1750, is the oldest preserved half-timbered house in the Bautzen district. It is one of the first half-timbered houses to be built as an angular structure. The house is surrounded by a cottage garden.

The house has essentially been preserved in its original state, only the thatched roof was replaced by a slate roof around 1900. The ground floor is divided into the weaver's room, Ausgedingestübel, hall, chamber, threshing floor, banse and two stables; the bedroom is in the attic. The wooden gutters are made from a tree trunk. There is a lightning snake on the gable end. The supporting pillars and corner posts standing free in front of the dark block walls reveal the construction of the surrounding area.

In 2007 the cultural monument was extensively renovated. For the exemplary renovation with empathy, detailed knowledge and expertise by recognized regional craft businesses, which brought the house to its best advantage, the community of Sohland was awarded the Environment House Prize 2008. Repair work was carried out in 2014.

museum

The museum, which opened in 1957, presents the original furnishings of an Upper Lusatian house weaver's house with a functioning loom. Old equipment for field management and horticulture as well as the coexistence of humans and animals under one roof are also shown.
