The Nellingen local history museum in the former schoolhouse in the center of the village of Nellingen on the Swabian Alb was opened in 1975.

history

In 1972 the granting of market rights by Emperor Charles IV was celebrated in Nellingen . For this 600th anniversary celebration, a local history book was published and preparations for a local history museum began. On April 20, 1975, the museum was inaugurated in the former schoolhouse built in 1927. A major renovation of the building took place in 1988 and 1989, and the museum was significantly expanded in the basement and the stage area.

The collections

The museum gives an impression of the work and life on the Swabian Alb in earlier times. A large number of historical agricultural implements are in the collection. A grain offshoot, a small threshing machine , a wooden plow and a dump cart are available as well as harnesses for draft animals.

A farmhouse parlor with old cupboards, chests, traditional costumes and numerous confirmation, marriage and death tables as well as a kitchen with old pots and dishes convey a vivid picture of the ancestors' living in the Swabian Alb. In the workshops of cooper, saddler, shoemaker and weaver, museum visitors can gain an insight into earlier craft professions. Weaving played an important role in Nellingen until the beginning of the 20th century. The museum provides information on flax cultivation , reels , spinning wheels and looms .

Also on display are an Avar skewer from the 7th century, Roman pot shards and fossils that were found during the land consolidation in the Nellingen district.

The history of the Amstetten-Laichingen narrow-gauge railway is documented in detail in the museum's basement. The train ran from 1900 to 1985 to Laichingen, today a museum train still runs from Amstetten to Oppingen. All the hand tools that were used to build the railway at the end of the 19th century are available in the Nellingen local history museum. The ticket office of the Nellingen train station is also in the museum.

The museum is open from April to October on the 1st Sunday of the month from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will also open its doors at the Jakobi-Markt in Nellingen (July 25). Special tours can be carried out at any time by prior arrangement, even in winter. Information is available from the Swabian Alb Association , Nellingen local group or from the Nellingen mayor's office, Schulplatz 17, 89191 Nellingen - phone 07337/96300.
