Life

The secret medical councilor Heino Goepel was an ophthalmologist and a student of Albrecht von Graefes . In 1856 he opened his practice in Frankfurt (Oder). In 1866 he took over the position of doctor for the poor in this city. He was married to Marie Lienau.

In his will he disposed of his fortune of 247,000 gold marks for a legacy to “found and maintain a house for poorly ill children for the purpose of strengthening them through open air and forest air” and a further legacy to the municipality of Frankfurt (Oder) with the provision for the investment of Public bathing establishments. Three baths were set up, the Marienbad, named after his wife's first name. The first was opened in 1901 on the Topfmarkt (demolished in 1974), the second in 1905 in Dresdener Straße and the third in 1913 in Dammvorstadt (today the Catholic Student Center in Słubice ).
