Heinrich Borwin III. (Mecklenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Borwin III. (* around 1220; † after 1279) was together with his brothers in 1227 and sole lord of Rostock from 1234 to 1266 . His brother Nikolaus I von Werle took over the reign until 1234.

He was the second youngest son of Heinrich Borwin II. After the division of the country , he was awarded the rule of Rostock consisting of the bailiwicks of Rostock, Ribnitz and Sülze / Marlow . The rule was under Saxon feudal sovereignty . In the war against Pomerania in 1236 he gained the Bailiwick of Kalen from the land of Zirzipanien . After his brother Pribislaw I was disempowered , the Bailiwick of Gnoien came under his control as part of the Parchim-Richenberg rule . He helped Denmark in the war against Holstein .

Domestically, Heinrich Borwin came into conflict with the up-and-coming Hanseatic city of Rostock . The building of a lordly castle there failed due to the resistance of the city.

Probably as a result of his own blindness, Heinrich Borwin handed over the business of government in full to his son Waldemar in 1266, but still lived in seclusion in 1279.

Since 1237 he was with Sophie from Sweden († before 24 June 1241), daughter of King Eric X. married. He was buried in Bad Doberan .
