Alban Heinrich von Wolffersdorff (born May 25, 1905 in Leipzig , † January 1, 1966 in Glauchau ) was a German ophthalmologist and founder of the eye clinic in Glauchau.

Live and act

Growing up in Crimmitschau, he passed his Abitur at the grammar school in Altenburg. He then studied medicine in Freiburg im Breisgau and Leipzig. In 1931, with his work on surgical treatment of glaucoma at the Leipzig University Eye Clinic, he was awarded Dr. med. PhD. After training as a specialist in neurology / psychiatry and ophthalmology, he worked as a senior physician under Prof. Ernst Hertel in ophthalmology until 1935 . He then settled in Glauchau and founded the Glauchau eye clinic.

In addition to medical work, scientific work followed - in particular on "Glauchau eye disease", an endemic conjunctivitis of viral origin caused by sulfur dioxide (pre-) damage to the cornea caused by air pollution. After his habilitation and venia legendi in 1958, he was appointed professor at the University of Leipzig in May 1964; two years before his death.

In addition to his book "Kerato-Conjunctivis epidemica: Epidemiology, Cause, Therapy, Prophylaxis" from 1959, Prof. von Wolffersdorff also made a significant contribution to the surgical treatment of corneal diseases.

In recognition of his achievements, the city of Glauchau renamed what was then "Feldstrasse" in 2003 to "Heinrich-von-Wolffersdorff-Strasse".
