The Heinrichsbrücke is a road bridge over the White Elster in Gera .

Location and importance of traffic

It connects the city center with the Debschwitz and Heinrichsgrün districts west of the river and at the same time forms the city's western arterial road, as Bundesstraße 2 crosses the Elster here. On its eastern edge, the bridge with the streets Am Sommerbad (B 2) from the north, Elsterdamm ( B 92 ) from the south and Heinrichstraße from the east form one of the city's largest intersections.

history

Today's streets Heinrichstraße and Straße des Friedens (B 2) have always formed the western Geras arterial road. In the Middle Ages, the first ford was located on the site of today's Heinrichsbrücke, which was replaced by the first bridge (first mentioned in 1594) in the 16th century. The bridge was destroyed several times by floods or ice.

The first stone bridge was built between 1838 and 1840 and was named Heinrichsbrücke when it was inaugurated on July 21, 1840 . In 1911/12 this bridge was replaced by a reinforced concrete arch bridge. In the years 1996 to 1999 a new reinforced concrete bridge with a sloping support frame was built due to defects in the old structure and the expiry of the operating permit. This new bridge consists of two parts, a road bridge and a tram bridge, which was built south of the old bridge. The bridge is now 55.70 m long and 27.8 m wide. During the construction period, a temporary bridge was built to the south of the old bridge as an extension of the street An der Spielwiese / Am Fuhrpark in order to be able to accommodate traffic into the city. This bridge was demolished again in the winter of 1999/2000 because it did not meet the requirements of flood protection.

On the bridge from 1912 there were coats of arms of the city of Gera and the Principality of Reuss younger line , which were set up in the nearby green areas at the summer pool after the bridge was demolished.

Surname

The Heinrichsbrücke was given its name in 1840 in honor of the Reuss Princely House , whose male members have all had the first name Heinrich since the Middle Ages. From 1950 to 1962 it was called the Josef-Stalin-Brücke , then was renamed Debschwitzer Brücke and a few weeks later Elsterbrücke . In 1991 it finally got its old name back.

The name of the bridge has only indirectly to do with the neighboring Heinrichstrasse . Although both are named after the Reussian princes, the western (and therefore closer to the bridge) section of Heinrichstrasse was originally called Schleizer Strasse . It was not until 1950 that both streets were merged to form Josef-Stalin-Straße (from 1961 Straße der Republik ). Since 1991, the entire street up to the bridge has been called Heinrichstraße.
