Heinz Engelhardt (born August 31, 1936 in Nuremberg ) is a German chemist and professor at the Saarland University .

Life

Engelhardt studied at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . He received his doctorate in 1965 and his habilitation in 1971 . As a post-doctoral student he was with Barry L. Karger in Boston. From 1971 he was a professor at Saarland University. He was at the Institute for Applied Physical Chemistry (headed by István Halász ) and headed it after Halász's retirement. After his retirement he was visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck .

Engelhardt is known for the development of high-performance separation processes in instrumental analysis and has dealt with organic analysis and bioanalysis. His monograph on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been translated into English, Russian and Chinese. He also made major contributions to Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) and Extraction (SFE) and Capillary Electrophoresis (CE). More than 250 scientific publications come from him. He supervised 97 doctoral students in Saarbrücken.

He received the Clemens Winkler Medal and the Fritz Pregl Medal from the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry. From 1990 to 2003 he published the journal Chromatographia. In 1993 he received the Martin Medal of the Chromatographical Society and in 1992 the Stephen Dal Nogare Award.

He is a member of the Science Council in Austria. For a long time Engelhardt was a board member of the GDCh specialist group for Analytical Chemistry and of the Separation Sciences working group.
