Heinz Jurkat

Heinz Jurkat (born April 7, 1929 in Köschen, Pillkallen district , East Prussia ; † July 8, 2011 in Uetersen ) was chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein State Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (BSVSH) and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Life

He was born in the small town of Köschen in the Schlossberg / East Prussia district. He went blind at the age of three. Between 1945 and 1950 he worked for the blind emergency community in Glückstadt. In 1947, Heinz Jurkat passed the office assistant examination at the Lübeck Chamber of Commerce and Industry and began his professional career in 1950 with the city administration in Uetersen. Despite his blindness, he mastered the 1st and 2nd administrative examinations without any problems, so nothing stood in the way of his career and promotion to city secretary and then city inspector, as well as city chief inspector and finally city administrator. Heinz Jurkat was also deputy treasurer , head of the citizens' advice center in the town hall and chairwoman of the staff council .

Heinz Jurkat was chairman of the state blind association for several decades and has not only made outstanding contributions to the blind and visually impaired system in Schleswig-Holstein, but also in various offices and functions throughout Germany. Heinz Jurkat headed the self-help organization as chairman until 1999 and shaped and determined the fate of the association during this time.

On June 17, 1995, on behalf of the then Federal President Roman Herzog , the then Minister of Social Affairs of Schleswig-Holstein, Heide Moser , presented Jurkat with the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon. " They have lost their eyesight, but their stamina is obviously greater than that of most people in our society, " said the minister when handing over the order.

Privately, he took part in the German blind correspondence chess championship and was a member of the choir of the Evangelical Lutheran monastery church in Uetersen .
