Heinz Steffens

Heinz Steffens (* 1913 in Bernburg ; † 1982 ) was a German painter and graphic artist. He is regarded as an important artist of classical modernism in central Germany.

Life

Steffens studied from 1931 to 1933 at Giebichenstein Castle with Erwin Hahs and Charles Crodel . This was followed by a time as a master student with Cesar Klein at the Berlin Academy of the Arts until 1938 . In the time of National Socialism his works were considered " degenerate ", so that he did not work artistically in the following. Steffens worked as a draftsman. During the Second World War he was taken prisoner of war.

In 1947 he returned to Bernburg and became a freelance artist. He worked for the Museum Bernburg, for which he designed many exhibitions, for example, in the 1960s and early 1970s, exhibition boards for the Münzkabinett, the permanent exhibition Prehistory and Early History and the permanent natural history exhibitions.

Heinz Steffens lived in Bernburg in the house where he was born at Liebknechtstraße 41d and belonged to the Association of Visual Artists Halle (Saale). He also exhibited his work in Bernburg.

His estate is in the Museum Schloss Bernburg . In 2014 a memorial plaque was unveiled on the house where he was born.
