Stammersdorf heating house

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stammersdorf heating house is a half-timbered house in the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf . It dates from 1913.

Boiler house and engine shed

It is located near the Stammersdorf train station, which was a unique example in Austria of a small terminus on the outskirts of the city. Otherwise, branch lines almost always had their starting point in a larger station. The Stammersdorf heating house is opposite the Van Swieten barracks with the army hospital.

history

From December 30, 1911, the contact wire spanned the former steam tramway route to Stammersdorf. Since that day, the tracks of the railway line have been divided. The part towards Vienna center became a tram operated by the City of Vienna. The part out of town (Stammersdorf itself only came to the municipality of Vienna in 1938) became the local railway.

A new terminus was built in Stammersdorf, including the distinctive boiler house on Kummergasse.

Todays use

Today it houses an art association that organizes exhibitions, readings and other cultural events. An international artist symposium takes place here every year.
