Hector of Watts

Hector von Watt (* around 1420 in St. Gallen ; † 1474 there ) was a Swiss merchant and mayor of St. Gallen ( Switzerland ).

Life

Hektor von Watt was born as the son of Hug von Watt (* around 1385 in St. Gallen; † 1460/61 there), an important merchant and one of the richest citizens of St. Gallen in the 15th century, and his wife Elisabeth Nostler. His siblings were:

  • Margareta von Watt (* unknown; † October 14, 1489), first married to Heinrich Miles and second marriage to Heinrich Üsikon (* unknown; † July 22, 1443)
  • Leonhard von Watt (* unknown; † December 28, 1520 in St. Gallen), married to Magdalena (* 1459 in St. Gallen; † March 19, 1524 there), daughter of Ulrich Thalmann (* unknown; † 1502) Son was Joachim Vadian

He was a merchant in St. Gallen and probably acquired his large fortune through his participation in commercial transactions.

In the period from 1460 to 1474 he was, alternating with Georg Gmünder , Hans Schurff and Othmar Schlaipfer , every three years mayor , former mayor and imperial bailiff in the city of St. Gallen, he also took on the function of seventh (court of seven: first and second instance jurisdiction in civil and disputes) and was a member of the interrogatory college.

Hector von Watt's first marriage was to Katharina, daughter of Johannes Bösch (* unknown; † 1445). Of the children, Hans and Hugo von Watt are known by name.

In his second marriage he was married to Fides, last name unknown.
