The natural monument was designated by ordinance of the Heidenheim District Office of November 10, 2005.
Location and description
The Heldenfinger Kliff is located on the eastern edge of the Gerstetter district of Heldenfingen . It was part of the rocky coast of the Tertiary Sea ( Upper Marine Molasse ) 15 million years ago. The long-lasting impact of the waves has carved out a typical hollow from the Weißjurafels. The Heldenfinger Kliff is described by geologists as the best preserved fossil beach, which is why the cliff line has gained scientific importance. The hollow itself, as well as the rock below and above it, is covered with holes made by drilling mussels and drilling sponges. These shells (pholades) bored into the mass limestone of the Upper Jurassic on the former rocky coast of the Molasse Sea. The sloping rocky seabed immediately in front of the cliff, which was only exposed in 1936, has also been worked in the same way by drilling mussels and drilling sponges.
A reef museum was opened in Gerstetten to introduce interested visitors to the former underwater world with corals and sponges. A multi-generation geological play park is located directly on the cliff. The Primeval Sea Path is a 14-kilometer circular route for hikers and cyclists and also begins at Heldenfinger Kliff.
The cliff is also protected as a geotope under the name Heldenfinger Kliff on the NE edge of Heldenfingen .
The Heldenfinger Kliff has been recognized as an important geotope and geopoint of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb since 2019 .
