Helen Güdel

Helen Güdel (born August 31, 1935 in Zurich ) is a Swiss painter , children's book author and illustrator .

Life

Helen Güdel grew up in Zurich. After graduating from business school, she worked as a secretary in Paris and San Francisco . In 1962 she married and lived in Zurich again. She is the mother of three grown sons who sold their pictures at the flea market in Zurich in the 1970s. There she was discovered by a gallery owner. In 1975 she had her first solo exhibition in Bern . In 1978 she discovered the village of Törbel at an altitude of 1500 m in the middle of the Valais mountains . This is often the central theme in her books. In 1983 her first illustrated book, Berner Bilderbuch, was published . Her understanding and love of detail, animals and the environment has influenced her painting.

In 1987, Helen Güdel finally settled in Törbel, entered into a partnership with a local farmer and got to know a new, rural side to her. After the death of her partner in 2010, his house was converted into a residential museum and gallery. A permanent exhibition of Güdel's work can be seen there, and one room offers space for a guest artist for a year.

Some of her pictures are exhibited in the Musée d'Art Naïf in Paris . Her books have been published in the USA, Australia, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, among others.
