Helene D. Gayle (born August 16, 1955 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American doctor and executive director of the Chicago Community Trust , one of the leading community foundations in the country. The Trust works with donors, nonprofits, community leaders, and residents to guide and inspire philanthropic endeavors that improve the quality of life for residents of the Chicago area.

From 2006 to 2015 she was President and CEO of McKinsey Social Initiative (now McKinsey.org) and the humanitarian organization CARE . Gayle previously led the HIV , TB and Reproductive Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and spent 20 years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) focusing on HIV / AIDS . Gayle also served as Chair of the Obama Administration Presidential Advisory Council . She has been named one of the best female leaders and global thinkers in the world. She was also listed by Forbes as one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World.

In 2020 Gayle was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
