The helimission is permanently in use in Madagascar , Indonesia and Ethiopia . Other countries of operation are being clarified.

history

Ernst Tanner, born in Winterthur, Switzerland, in 1927, attended art schools in Bern, Amsterdam, Philadelphia and Woodstock in the USA. In 1948 he emigrated to the USA. After his recruiting school in the US Air Force, he completed a theology degree and was ordained a pastor in 1955.

He later returned to Europe. In 1957 he married his wife Hedi. Together with her, he looked after several communities in Switzerland and Germany and they offered children's camps in Trogen. At the end of the 1960s, during a stay in Africa, under the influence of helicopter technology in the Vietnam War, he recognized the possibility of using this aircraft to help people in need.

In 1971 he acquired a helicopter license and founded the Helimission Foundation, which is now managed by his son Simon Tanner. In 1972 Ernst Tanner made his first missionary assignment. He flew in a small helicopter from Switzerland to Cameroon, flew over the Sahara and unintentionally set a world record: he was the first person to fly over the Sahara in a helicopter.

purpose

“The purpose of the foundation is to bring help to the body and soul of the suffering population in remote areas by purchasing, renting and chartering helicopters or light aircraft. Particular emphasis is placed on operations in the drought areas, which are increasingly affected by famine. Helimission transports food, medicine, medical and nursing staff, building materials for hospitals in the bush and occasionally also veterinarians with their equipment. Very often they fly government officials as part of development aid. In all of these outreaches, the foundation is determined by the objective of demonstrating God's love not only in word but also in deed to people and enabling the preaching and spreading of the Gospel in areas that are difficult to access, undeveloped and dangerous. Wherever there is, pastors and missionaries fly with them to ensure the dedicated work. "

Focus

The helimission has two main focuses:

Long-term assignments in remote areas

The Helimission currently operates 4 helicopter bases: on the Indonesian islands of Papua and Sulawesi as well as in Ethiopia and Madagascar .

From her bases she supports the local mission organizations in the bush by carrying out supply flights for them. In addition, the helicopters transport building materials, medicines and medical facilities and enable the supply and maintenance of bush hospitals.

They also fly medical personnel to remote areas to treat the locals.

Many flights are used to rescue emergency patients and accident victims.

SOS operations in disaster areas

In the event of unexpected events, such as natural disasters, famine, refugee misery, etc., Helimission, in cooperation with other aid organizations, provides rapid SOS aid to the population in the affected areas. The helicopters flew missions during drought disasters in Ethiopia and Sudan, during the civil war in Rwanda, during the Kosovo conflict, after the tsunami in the Indian Ocean and the severe earthquake in Haiti.

financing

The Helimission is financed by donations. Disaster operations and patient transport are usually free of charge for users. The foundation bears the maintenance costs of the helicopters. Pilots and mechanics do their work without any remuneration from the foundation.
