content

The young ninja Gabimaru ( 画眉 丸 ) from the village of Iwagakure is one of the best in his craft. But after he was married to the daughter of the clan chief, he wants to give up killing. On the next mission he will be betrayed and sentenced to death. Despite his assurances that he would die himself, any attempt at execution is thwarted by his ninja techniques. The executioner Sagiri Yamada Asaemon ( 山田 浅 ェ 門 佐切 ) finally finds out that it is the love for his wife that keeps Gabimaru in this world. She suggests a new mission for him to earn a pardon: the island of Shinsenkyo was discovered south of Japan, where the elixir of eternal life is said to be found. The Shogun wants this for himself and has already sent five expeditions, but none have returned. If Gabimaru can bring the elixir to the shogun, his life will be spared.

The ninja is sent to Shinsenkyo together with Sagiri as his guardian. But he is not the only doomed man who has accepted the trade. Nine more have been sent with their guards and are now - in addition to the dangers of the foreign land - as competitors for the elixir.
