Pergamon Museum - Collection of Antiquities - Relief 32.JPG

It is a high relief depicting the deceased, which is surrounded by splendid architectural elements. Two slender Corinthian columns rise above the profiled base . The columns support an entablature consisting of an architrave and a tooth cut . On top of it is an attic , which is adorned with a rosette on each side and a wreath in the middle. A gable that is provided with a tooth cut and acroteria forms the conclusion . The relief was found on the caravan bridge in Smyrna . In 1878 it was acquired for the Antikensammlung in Berlin. The material is coarse-grained, gray-bluish-white marble. The height is 155.4 cm, the width 66 cm.

The central figures emerge almost in free plastic form in front of the relief ground. The relief is dominated by the figure of the deceased woman. She is richly dressed and wears a long sleeve chiton , over which a cloak is placed over her left shoulder, which crosses in front of her body and forms a puff in front that is held by her left arm. This rich drapery , which also includes the hem on the neck of the chiton, corresponds to the taste of the period in the second half of the 2nd century BC. BC and also returns elsewhere, such as finds from Pergamon . She wears sandals on her feet. She raised her hand in a gesture of speech, open to the outside. She is holding a poppy head in her left hand . Her face clearly shows signs of age.

Two smaller figures, young girls, are depicted at the woman's feet. A reduction of such figures was common in classical art, but here the figures are shown particularly small. The girl on the left is holding in her hands a huge torch higher than the deceased. The girl on the right holds a jug in her hands. Above him lies a cornucopia on a high pillar filled with numerous fruits. Torch and poppy head, possibly the horn of plenty, have the cult of Demeter - Kore out. It can be assumed that the deceased was a priestess of Demeter. Typologically the representation is based on the honorary statue of a Demeter priestess from Smyrna.
