Hellmut von Schweinitz

Hellmut von Schweinitz (born September 12, 1901 in Elberfeld , † November 23, 1960 in Luxembourg ) was a German journalist, writer and Protestant pastor .

Von Schweinitz had studied literature and literary history in Munich. In 1932 he took over the editor-in-chief of the Berlin daily newspaper “ Der Reichsbote ”. In addition to his journalistic activities, he also wrote poems, novels and legends. From 1933 he was banned from working and was alternately banned from writing and speaking. He was also interrogated several times by the Gestapo . In 1935, von Schweinitz began studying theology in Halle. In 1941 he became a pastor. A year later, in 1942, he was drafted into military service by the Wehrmacht . After the Second World War he was in Meisenheim from 1947 to 1958 . In 1949 he founded the Meisenheimer Dichterwoche, which took place annually until 1960 under his direction.

In 2011 the square in front of the Meisenheim parish hall was renamed Hellmut-von-Schweinitz-Platz in his honor.
