His most important teacher was the gestalt psychologist Edwin Rausch . After graduating, he worked as a research assistant and assistant at the Institute for Educational Psychology at the University of Frankfurt. His subsequent dissertation was devoted to memory processes that play a role in the temporal localization of life events. He completed this work in 1976 with Friedrich Hoeth at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1987 he qualified as a professor at the University of Dortmund under Klaus Bräuer with a thesis on joke structures - gestalt theoretical contributions to joke technology . In it, phenomena such as figure-ground reversals and variability-constancy relationships, as well as other findings from gestalt-theoretical reference system research, are applied to the field of joke technology. Metz-Göckel deepened the topic of reference systems in his later research, lecture and publication activities.

Hellmuth Metz-Göckel taught and researched until his retirement as professor at the Institute for Psychology in Faculty 14 of the University of Dortmund (later renamed Technical University of Dortmund) with a focus on general psychology, social psychology and methodology. Since 2007 he has been chairman of the international multidisciplinary society for Gestalt theory and its applications . He is consultant editor of the journal Gestalt Theory and editor of the handbook on Gestalt theory , two volumes of which have been published so far (2008 Volume 1: Gestalt Theory Current , 2011 Volume 2: Gestalt Theoretical Inspirations ).
