Hells Kitchen Railway Museum & Bar is a private railway museum on Main Street of Castlerea in County Roscommon , Ireland .

history

The small private museum shows the collection of the railway enthusiast Sean Browne , who began to compile railway memorabilia in the 1950s : from signals , lamps, bells and tokens to warning signs, posters and timetables to station boards. The highlight of the collection is an A55 diesel locomotive (built in 1955) that was discarded in 1994 and a railroad car . When the Irish railways switched from diesel to electric, he took the opportunity to procure. The transport of the 15.50 m long, 4.25 m high and 61 t heavy vehicle to the bar of the museum required major renovation work on the building. The big locomotive in the little bar became a local curiosity.

The locomotive cost £ 100,000 when it was first purchased, which would be around € 2.5 million today, but Sean Browne was the only one interested in getting it for the scrap value of £ 1,600 from the Irish railway company Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) . The locomotive began its last journey from Dublin to Castlerea on July 7, 1998 .

One of the most historically valuable exhibits is the token or relay stick for the line from Ballaghaderreen to Kilfree Junction , which was used on the last line that was still regularly used by steam locomotives until it was closed in 1963.
