Helmer (street)

As Helmer (also: Hellmer ) are mainly in areas on the Lower Weser connecting paths between the dike and the settlement. They were as rural roads built by the settlers, within the meaning of the dike law were required for the maintenance of the assigned dike section. A Helmer leads straight from a farm or a village through moor or marsh to the dike and is often referred to by the family or place name, for example "Hayens Helmer" near Brake or "Wersaber Helmer" in Wersabe . Today, the Helmer are often designated as private roads and therefore cannot be used by unauthorized persons; however, they are mostly approved as footpaths and cycle paths. They are maintained by the respective residents at their own expense.
