Helmut Becker (archaeologist)

Helmut Becker (born August 26, 1944 in Trautenau ) is a German geophysicist and geoarchaeologist .

Helmut Becker studied physics and geosciences at the University of Munich from 1965 to 1971 and graduated in 1971 with a diploma. In his diploma thesis he dealt with the measurement of magnetic fields. He received his doctorate in 1978 with a thesis on magnetics in the neovolcanic zone in northeast Iceland . In addition, between 1973 and 1979 he studied Prehistory and Early History , Provincial Roman Archeology and Near Eastern Archeology at the University of Munich. From 1977 to 1982 he worked on the research project Archaeo Prospection and Archaeomagnetism of the Volkswagen Foundation at the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Munich.

From 1982 until his retirement in 2006 he worked for the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . There he built a laboratory for digital aerial photo processing and geophysical prospecting . Since 1986 he has headed the Archaeological Prospecting and Aerial Archeology Department of the State Office. He was also a research associate at the Institute for General and Applied Geophysics at the University of Munich, where he held courses on geophysical archaeometry . He was also a lecturer on this subject at the University of Marburg .

Becker took part in excavations in Greece, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Spain and Bulgaria. In addition, he supported numerous archaeological prospecting projects both in Germany and abroad. After his retirement he founded the company "Becker Archaeological Prospection" in 2007 to continue this work. He has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 2001 .
