Helmut F. Erbersdobler

Helmut F. Erbersdobler (born December 27, 1937 in Fürstenzell ) is a German veterinarian and nutritionist. From 1980 to 2003 he was professor for “Special Human Nutrition and Food Science” and Director of the Institute for Human Nutrition and Food Science at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

Life

Erbersdobler studied veterinary medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Humboldt University in Berlin and received his doctorate in Munich in 1963. He then worked at the Institute for Physiology, Physiological Chemistry and Nutritional Physiology at the Ludwig Maximilians University. In December 1967 he completed his habilitation with the thesis “Investigations on the analytical and physiological characterization of amino acid damage during heat treatment of food and feed”. In 1974 he was appointed adjunct professor and finally professor for food science at the University of Munich and was then professor for food science and special human nutrition at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1980 until his retirement in 2003.

Together with Christian A. Barth , he was the initiator and editor of the Zeitschrift für Ernahrungwissenschaften (now the European Journal of Nutrition ). Erbersdobler was for many years President (now Honorary President) of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) and publisher (now honorary publisher) of the Nutrition Review.

Research priorities

Erbersdobler's research primarily dealt with questions of protein assessment and quality ( Maillard reaction), the health assessment of food oils (BMBF Napus project) and intolerance reactions to grain proteins ( celiac disease ).

Awards

Erbersdobler has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. In 2003 he received the Adolf Juckenack Medal from the Food Chemical Society (LGCh).
