Helmut Hillebrand

Helmut Hillebrand (born August 3, 1966 in Papenburg ) is a German biologist and algae scientist. He is a professor at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg and was managing director of the Institute for the Biology and Chemistry of the Sea (ICBM).

Algal bloom around Gotland (summer 2007). Hillebrand investigated dangerous algal blooms within the project “Recurrent Extreme Events in Spatially Extended Systems: Mechanisms of their Generation and Termination”, 2011–2014.

Hillebrand received his doctorate in 1999 from the University of Kiel . He then worked as a post-doctoral student in the Erkenlabor at Uppsala University . Subsequently, he was junior professor at the University of Kiel (2002–2004) and associate professor in aquatic ecology (Botanical Institute) at the University of Cologne (2004–2008). In 2008 he became Professor of Pelagic Ecology at the ICBM of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in the work group for planktology .

Hillebrand is on the editorial board of the scientific journals Ecology Letters (since 2004), Ecology (since 2005) and Marine Biodiversity .
