Ulrich Sommer (born September 1, 1952 in Vienna ) is an Austrian ecologist who is best known for his work in the field of limnology and marine biology .

Ulrich Sommer began his scientific career as a research assistant at the Institute for Plant Physiology at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1977 and worked until 1979. From 1979 to 1985 he worked as an assistant professor at the Limnological Institute at the University of Konstanz , where he received his habilitation in 1985 .

In 1985 he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Limnology in Plön , where he worked in the Ecophysiology group with Winfried Lampert until 1991. In 1991, Sommer was appointed to the chair for microbiology of geological processes at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Sea at the University of Oldenburg . called. Ulrich Sommer devoted his research to the ecology in plankton and in the soil communities and investigated the interspecific interrelationships of species, especially competition and nutrition, with the influence of species dominance, coexistence and species diversity playing a central role.
