Helmut Johannsen (born January 28, 1908 in Neumünster , Holstein; † 20th century or 21st century) was a German dentist and SS functionary, most recently in the rank of SS Obersturmbannführer . Johannsen was, among other things, chief dentist at the Buchenwald concentration camp .

Life

Johannsen was the son of the master instrument maker Heinrich A. Johannsen and his wife Emmy, née Fock. From 1914 to 1926 he attended grammar school in Neumünster, where he received his school-leaving certificate on February 22, 1926 . After leaving school, he initially worked in commercial professions for several years before finally starting to study dentistry at Kiel University in 1932 .

In February 1934, Johannsen passed the preliminary dental examination in Kiel. He then continued his studies at the University of Hamburg , where he passed the dental exam on February 15, 1936 and received his license to practice medicine .

Career in National Socialism

As an SS member (SS no. 69.470), Johannsen had already joined the SS standard "Germania" of the SS disposal force in Hamburg in August 1934 . After obtaining his license to practice medicine, he was finally transferred to the dental station of the SS-Standarte in Munich . At that time (in the summer semester of 1937) he attended various medical lectures at the University of Munich to deepen his knowledge . Following a brief assignment to the SS military hospital in Munich-Dachau (Dachau concentration camp ), Johannsen was transferred to the SS dental station in Weimar-Buchenwald ( Buchenwald concentration camp ) in March 1938 , where he took on the position of senior dentist with the rank of Untersturmführer. As an SS medic, Johannsen was promoted to at least the rank of Obersturmbannführer.

After the Second World War , Johannsen was questioned as a witness during the Nuremberg Trials .
