Helophorus nubilus is a beetle from the family of water beetles (Hydrophilidae) and the subfamily Helophorinae .

features

The brown beetles are 3–4 mm long. The pronotum is traversed by five longitudinal furrows. The sides of the pronotum are a little lighter in color. The elytra , on which there are several dark spots, are provided with numerous longitudinal stripes of dots.

distribution

The beetle species is widespread in Europe. In Central Europe, the species is more common in the north than in the south. The species is also represented in the British Isles.

Way of life

The beetles prefer dry habitats, loamy fields and ruderal areas. Helophorus nubilus is an agricultural pest of winter cereals. The larvae feed on the lower part of the saplings , causing the inner leaves to turn yellow. The damage that occurs between January and March can be avoided with a sufficiently long interval (usually a month) between plowing and sowing the grain.
