Hemis is the seat of one of the oldest and largest Buddhist monasteries in the area (Hemis Gompa), which has been in existence since around 300 BC. Originated there. That monastery became known in Europe in 1894 through the travel report of a Russian journalist named Nikolai Notowitsch , recognized as authentic by Elisabeth Clare Prophet and Swami Abhedananda and many others, as the alleged destination of a hike of Jesus Christ .

Every year Hemis hosts a large colorful festival with masquerades, dances, etc., which attracts many tourists. Since 1981 the region has been designated as a national park and animal protection area, with an average altitude of over 3000 m.
