Hemming

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hemming († 811 or 812) was a Danish Viking king from 810 to 811/812 .

Life

Hemming was the nephew of his predecessor Gudfred , who was murdered by his own people in 810 in an inner Danish power struggle - during a campaign against Charlemagne . In 811 Hemming made peace with Charlemagne, who had besieged Denmark from the south. In a contract concluded on the Eider Island in what is now Rendsburg , twelve Danish and Franconian negotiators agreed for the first time on the Eider as the border between the Franconian and Danish empires.

Hemming's early death triggered a war of succession: the two main contenders Sigifrid († around 811) and Anulo († 812) lost their lives. Anulos brothers Harald Klak and Ragnfrid (Reginfrid) followed as the common kings of Jutland .
