Henri Arnaut de Zwolle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henri Arnaut de Zwolle , Heinrich Arnold von Zwolle or Arnault de Zwolle (* around 1400 ; † September 6, 1466 in Paris ), was a Flemish doctor, designer and astronomer at the court of Duke Philip the Good in Burgundy , in what is now Belgium. He developed a gemstone cutter in 1439 and described the clavichord in 1440.

The nickname “de Zwolle” is said to come from his place of study. Henri Arnaut remained known for the publication of a textbook for musical instruments published in Latin. In it he gives the first precise descriptions of the construction and blueprints for the harpsichord (“ clavisimbalum ”), the clavichord (“ clavicordium ”) and for a keyboard instrument called “ dulce melos ” with an early form of hammer action .

He later worked as an astrologer in the service of the French kings Charles VII and Louis VII.
