Jean Huber: Voltaire on Lake Geneva, 1778

With well over 700 individual texts, Voltaire left behind one of the most extensive and comprehensive works in literary and intellectual history.

The history of publication and printing is unique in its complexity and many details have been incomplete or not researched at all to this day. Milestones in the bibliography are the works and catalogs of works by Adrien-Jean-Quentin Beuchot, Georges Bengesco, Louis Molands and Theodore Bestermans . The current state of affairs is attempted by the not yet completed Oxford Voltaire edition . The main problem is that there are sometimes decades between the creation and authorized printing, even for major works. Many important texts were only published posthumously in full or even in the first edition. The authorized first relocation is often preceded by several pirate editions based on insecure copies or stolen manuscripts. There are also many encores from the editors who wanted to participate in the work with good, but also malicious intent. In addition, Voltaire revised and expanded many of his important texts several times. The Oxford publishers respond to this problem by determining and printing a basic text that does not always have to correspond to the authorized first edition.

The following list holds (as close as possible to the Oxford Voltaire edition) at the time of the authorized first publication. If there is a pirate edition with a historically significant reception , such as the verse epic La Pucelle d'Orléans, this is also equated with a first edition (the printing of the Pucelle is an example of the complex printing history of Voltaire's works: the text on the Pucelle was written by Voltaire around 1730 La Beaumelle probably published a pirate edition in 15 songs in Frankfurt in October 1755. At least five counter-versions followed in Switzerland and Belgium in the fourth quarter of 1755, some of which differed only in typographical elements. In 1762, Voltaire included the first original edition Cramer in Geneva in 21. Another edition with annotations under the pseudonym of Abbé Morza followed in 1773. The last critical version according to Voltaire's intention was published by Jeroom Vercruysse in 1970. Vercruysse first mentions that of the editions of 1755 with 161 pages as the first from Frankfurt Edition preceded by the half-title «La P. d'O» t. There is another variant which has a title on different paper and a two-page preface bound and there are copies which combine the half-title, the secondary title and the foreword).

Examples of contemporary German editions of Voltaire's works

Old translations sometimes have stylistic and factual errors. There are also omissions and changes in meaning or even distortions of meaning if the translator represented contradicting political or religious views. A comparison with the original text is therefore always necessary in individual cases. According to Günther Mensching, the early translations of Mylius and Romanus are mostly without major errors. Only some of Voltaire's writings have been translated into German since the 18th century. Only a few titles are currently available in stores.

Seizures, bans and burns of Voltaire's writings

An important point for the reception and publication history of Voltaire's writings are the state and ecclesiastical prohibitions, the confiscations and the public burning of the books. A large part of the works, especially the dramatic work, were officially submitted to the censorship by Voltaire and then received approval and the privilege . As early as 1723, when “La Ligue” was about to be published, it was clear that the censorship would not approve of the then explosive issue of the previous religious wars. Voltaire decided to spread it secretly. The printing was done under the wrong imprint in Rouen. The two thousand copies of the first edition were secretly smuggled into Paris in furniture transports. In 1730 a similar attempt to bring the "Histoire de Charles XII" into the city by water, failed because of the vigilance of the "Garde des Sceaux". The book was neither banned nor indexed in France, although it contained a number of politically questionable and ecclesiastically damnable passages. Voltaire himself took legal action against the black publishing trade of his time. At his report, the 1200 copies of the Saillant edition of the "Histoire de la Guerre de 1741" were confiscated in 1755 and held in the Bastille. During the period of the "Ecrasez l'Infame" campaign, a certain routine developed. The bans followed the order Geneva, Paris and Rome. The title and imprint of the first editions reflect Voltaire's mockery and fun in dealing with the institution of censorship. The other side also reacted. In 1759 Voltaire's successful and correct transfer was placed on the Romanus Index because of the authorship and dedication to Frederick II of Prussia. Notwithstanding this, Voltaire also published on the official channel, on which, curiously, he himself had to suffer a setback in 1773. The censor Martin withheld the manuscript of the tragedy “Les Loix de Minos” for months, while he had long since sold it clandestinely to Valadé , another representative of the black publishing trade.

Dedication sheets in volume 10 of the Kehler edition of
works by Jean-Michel Moreau
Organizational plan in the 70th volume of the Kehler edition of
works by Jean-Michel Moreau

From 1728 complete editions of Voltaire's works appeared in quick succession. Its literary value is measured by the extent to which Voltaire himself was involved in the publication and to what extent the first published texts are incorporated. Most of the editions of the 18th century were made outside France, if only to avoid confiscation by the authorities. The bibliography of the early editions still contains surprises today. Andrew Brown first described three volumes of an independent edition in c18 in 2007 with the imprint "Rotterdam 1741".

The most important total editions in chronological order are

  • 1. the Ledet edition of 1738, in which Voltaire stopped participating in the publication of the fifth volume. Volumes 7, 8 and 9 are rare. Their existence only became public in the last few decades.
  • 2. the Trévoux 1746 edition, in which Voltaire was indirectly involved through Thiériot. In it, chapters on the Siècle de Louis XIV are pre-published.
  • 3. The Walther 1748 edition, of which Voltaire played a major role and which contains a considerable number of first published texts.
  • 4. the Lambert 1751 edition, which is considered the first official French edition.
  • 5. the first edition of Cramer's works in 1756, followed by the first version of de Essai sur les Moeurs.
  • 6. the Cramer 1775 edition, which is known as "L'encadrée" because of its text frame.
  • 7. the first comprehensive edition Kehl 1784 (1785), the most ambitious publishing company of the 18th century, under the editorship of Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais and Marie Antoine Nicolas de Caritat, Marquis de Condorcet.
  • 8. Didot et al. 1828 edited by A. Beuchot.
  • 9. the annotated edition of Moland 1877.
  • 10. the Oxford 1968 edition, which tries to reconstruct the respective basic text with bibliographical references.
