Henrik Hololei (born April 1, 1970 ) is an Estonian economist. He is currently a European Union official .

Early years

Henrik Hololei was born the son of the well-known Estonian sports journalist Gunnar Hololei (1927–2009). After finishing school in Tallinn, he studied economics at the Tallinn University of Technology from 1988 to 1993 . In 1992 he spent a year abroad at Aarhus University .

European politics

From 1993 to 1995 he worked for the Estonian Representation of the Finnish Foreign Trade Association. He then held various functions in the Estonian administration, mostly in connection with European affairs. In the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Laar , the then non-party Hololei served as Estonian Minister of Economics from October 2001 to January 2002. He was then head of the European Integration Office of the Estonian government. In 2004 he joined the conservative party Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit .

After Estonia joined the European Union, Hololei moved to the European Commission in Brussels, where he headed the cabinet of Commissioner and later Vice-President Siim Kallas from 2004 to 2013 . From 2013 to 2015 he was Deputy Secretary General of the European Commission. Hololei has headed the Directorate General Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) as General Director since October 2015 .
