Micaiah John Muller Hill

Micaiah John Muller Hill (born February 22, 1856 in Berhampur , Bengal , India , † 1929 ) was a British mathematician .

Life

Hill was born the son of a missionary in India (where he narrowly escaped the Bengal uprising). His third first name Muller comes from his mother's maiden name (Leonora Müller). He studied at Cambridge University (Peterhouse College) and was fourth in the Tripos exams in 1879. He was from 1880 professor of mathematics at Mason College (later Birmingham University ) in Birmingham and from 1884 professor of pure mathematics at University College London . From 1907 to 1923 he was Astor Professor of Mathematics at the University of London. From 1909 to 1911 he was Vice Chancellor of the University of London.

He did research on hydrodynamics, hypergeometric series and differential equations and dealt with Euclidean geometry. A spherical vortex solution (1894) and a shape of space-filling tetrahedra (1896) are named after him.

From 1894 he was a Fellow of the Royal Society . 1926/27 he was president of the Mathematical Association .

Hill was one of the mathematicians whom CLT Griffith wrote to in 1912 regarding the work of S. Ramanujan of India. Griffith had been a student of Hill in London. Hill pointed out pitfalls in handling divergent series that would reveal Ramanujan's lack of mathematical knowledge, but gave benevolent advice.
