Henry AG Lee

Henry AG Lee (* around 1818 in Virginia (USA), † 1851 ) was an American politician.

Life

Lee was born in Virginia around 1818. In 1843 he was part of the John C. Frémont 's Army Expedition, which traveled through the western United States, including what is now the state of Oregon . During this expedition he was sent to Kit Carson with a dispatch asking Carson to join the group. When the group later split, Lee stayed with John Fremont before returning to Oregon on September 22nd. After he settled there, he was elected to the Provisional Legislature of Oregon in 1845. He represented the Clackamas District there and served as speaker in the December meeting.

In 1846 he became the second editor of Oregon Spectator , the first magazine in the region. He replaced William G. T'Vault and remained editor for 9 issues before George Law Curry took over the position. After the war against the Indians ( Cayuse War ) ended, Lee was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs by Governor George Abernethy in 1848 . In 1849 he sought his fortune in the California gold rush . He was successful there and was able to start a company in 1850 when he returned to Oregon City. In that year he also went to New York to get various inventory for his shop, but died of Panama fever on his return to Oregon in 1851.
