Henry William Chesbrough (born February 2, 1956 ) is an American economist. He coined the term Open Innovation and is the author of the book Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology (HBS Press, 2003). He has also authored two other books on Open Innovation: Open Business Models: How to Thrive in the New Innovation Landscape (HBS Press, 2006) and Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm (Oxford, 2006), a compilation of scientific papers.

Chesbrough is currently an Associate Professor and the General Manager of the Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley . Prior to his time at Haas, he taught at Harvard Business School as a research assistant .

Chesbrough holds a BA in Business Administration from Yale University , an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business , and a PhD from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley . In 2017 he received the IRI Medal .
