Henry Duncan Monument

The Henry Duncan Monument is a memorial in the Scottish scattered settlement Mouswald in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

The memorial commemorates Henry Duncan , who served as a parish priest in the area and opened the first savings bank in Scotland in 1810 (see Ruthwell Museum ). As an architect, James Raeburn is responsible for the design. The stonemason Alexander Crombie implemented the design in 1846.

The monument rests on a base with a square floor plan. This is designed on all sides with arched openings with keystones . Friezes run over it . On the west side there is a bronze medallion with the portrait of Duncan, framed by a wreath. A tall obelisk rests on the base .
