history

The company traces its roots back to a pharmacy founded in 1932 by Henry and Esther Schein in Woodside (part of Queens , New York State). 1942 began with the apparent direct sales of penicillin , so a first growth phase began. From the 1950s onwards, Schein shifted the focus from consumer business to supplying practices and laboratories. In the 1980s, Jay Schein introduced extensive automation of the entire supply chain, which contributed to further strong growth. Numerous takeovers from competitors followed to this day. After Jay Schein's death in 1989, the company began entering the international market (starting in Europe) under the leadership of Stanley M. Bergman. The company has been listed on the NASDAQ since 1995 (abbreviation HSIC).

Social responsibility

Henry Schein's commitment to social responsibility developed over almost eight decades from a deeply rooted family tradition and led to the establishment of Henry Schein Cares, the company's corporate social responsibility program. Under the motto “Helping Health Happen”, Henry Schein supports activities around the world that enable better medical care for disadvantaged population groups.

Henry Schein Cares focuses on the further development of three areas: prevention and treatment, strengthening the ability to help themselves, as well as disaster risk reduction and emergency aid. The business magazine Fortune has awarded Henry Schein first place in his industry in the “Social Responsibility” category in the global ranking of the “World's Most Admired Companies”.
