Henry Stradling (nobleman)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Henry Stradling (also Harri Stradling ) (* 1423 ; † August 31, 1476 ) was an English nobleman.

Origin and captivity with Breton pirates

Henry Stradling came from the Stradling family , a gentry family with estates in south Wales and south west England. He was the eldest son of Sir Edward Stradling and his wife Jane Beaufort , an illegitimate daughter of Cardinal Beaufort . Henry's father was not only a major landowner, but also held numerous positions of influence. To do this, he exported wool to France with his own ships. On one of these ships, Henry traveled with his wife and daughter in 1449 from their Somerset holdings to St Donat's Castle, the family headquarters in Glamorgan . Her ship was hijacked in the Bristol Channel by Breton pirates led by Colyn Dolphin. Henry was taken to St. Malo and his father had to pay a ransom of 1,000 marks for his release . For this his father had to sell parts of his property in Glamorgan and Oxfordshire. Nevertheless, in 1451, 600 marks of the ransom had not been paid. His relative John Stradling, who held himself hostage, vouched for this sum. After the death of his father in 1453, Henry inherited the remaining, still extensive estates.

Marriage, offspring, pilgrimage and death

Stradling had married Elizabeth, a daughter of Sir William ap Thomas von Raglan. He was linked to his brother-in-law, William Herbert , and was believed to have sided with the House of York during the Wars of the Roses. Like his father and grandfather, he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, which he set out on in the mid-1470s. First he reached Rome, where he acquired papal absolution for himself and his wife . Then he traveled on to Jerusalem, where he was made Knight of the Holy Sepulcher . During the return journey he died in Cyprus and was buried in Famagusta . Stradling had written a report of his trip that was returned to Wales and was probably kept in the library of the family estate of St Donat's Castle until the 18th century .

He had several children with his wife Elizabeth:

  • Thomas Stradling (around 1454–1480) ⚭ Jenet Mathew
  • Jane Stradling ⚭ Miles ap Harry

His heir became his son Thomas Stradling, after his untimely death on September 8, 1480, his grandson Edward Stradling inherited his property.
