A heraldic association serves to maintain heraldry , that is, heraldry, heraldic art and heraldry law.

With the abolition of the heraldry in the German federal states , the state's influence on personal coat of arms and registration in Germany disappeared in the years 1918 to 1920 - unless state coats of arms are adopted for personal use (coat of arms, advertising ). Today, heraldry is maintained in particular by the heraldic associations (some of which were founded in the 19th century) - such as the Herold association and the heraldic association “Zum Kleeblatt” as well as free heraldists. In some foreign countries there are still state institutions that are responsible for the order of the coat of arms.
Although the coat of arms was originally a cultural phenomenon that took account of medieval circumstances, it remained alive through the many centuries. From the late baroque onwards, however, a certain period of decay came for heraldic art. The individual components of the coat of arms were no longer understood in terms of their function and proportions, and some of them were disfigured beyond recognition. Only the age of Romanticism brought a certain revival of heraldry , which received important impulses from the scientific and non-profit heraldic associations that had emerged since the middle of the 19th century .
When heraldists and people interested in heraldry decided in the 19th (and partly still in the 20th century) to channel historical, genealogical and heraldic knowledge through joint research and processing by merging into a non-profit association, they didn't just want you Expand your own specialist knowledge, but also pass it on to others.

Heraldic Societies
