The association was founded in 1925 on the initiative of Friedrich Hegi-Naef . Initially, Swiss heraldry interests were strongly represented, which was expressed in the name of the "Association of Zurich Heraldists and Genealogists". Today the discipline of family history research ( genealogy ) is more in the foreground.

The GHGZ is mainly active in the canton of Zurich , but also in neighboring regions of the cantons of Aargau , Schaffhausen and Thurgau . She issues her own publications, conducts genealogical lectures and basic courses as well as genealogical and cultural-historical trips abroad. Today the events take place in the State Archives Zurich , the club library is in the Paul Kläui library in Uster .

The association has been a member of the Swiss Society for Family Research since 1941 and a section of the Swiss Heraldic Society since 1946 . The membership is currently (2017) 240 people.
