life and work

Hegi was the son of the pastor and canton councilor Gustav and Barbara, née Benz. His brother was Gustav Hegi .

Hegi studied history at the University of Zurich . In 1905 he received his doctorate in history and was the second state archivist at the Zurich State Archives . Hegi completed his habilitation in 1913 at the University of Zurich as a private lecturer for historical auxiliary sciences and in 1921 he was appointed adjunct professor . In 1917, Hegi resigned as state archivist in order to be able to devote himself freely to scientific activities. As a result, he devoted himself to monument protection , heraldry, genealogy and castle research, with professor and wife Isabella Rosa Hegi-Näf actively supporting him.

Hegi had also worked for the Swiss homeland security department since 1912 . He was a member of the board of the Zurich Association and the official cantonal nature and homeland protection commission. From 1919 to 1921 he represented Zurich on the central board. On Hegi's initiative, a number of castle ruins were excavated and exposed. Hegi acquired Hegi Castle in 1915 and had it carefully restored until 1930.

In addition to his teaching and research activities, Hegi was a member of numerous boards of directors of associations and societies that dealt with the maintenance and research of history and its auxiliary areas. On his initiative the Genealogical-Heraldic Society of Zurich was founded in 1925 . Hegi was also a member of the board of the Antiquarian Society of Zurich , the Castle Association and the Kyburg Castle Commission . Hegi published his research in numerous publications, magazines and New Year's books.

Thanks to Hegi, the necessary funds for the inventory of the art monuments in the canton of Zurich could be secured by the canton, the city of Zurich, municipalities and private individuals. Due to his premature death, however, Hegi was no longer able to carry out this work.
