The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada ( RHSC ) is a Canadian scientific society with the aim of promoting (especially Canadian) heraldry and providing information about it on a scientific basis. The Society's patron is the Governor General of Canada , Julie Payette, and the Vice-patron is the Supreme Court Chairwoman, Beverley McLachlin . Edward (Ted) McNabb has been President of the Society since 2015.
history
The company was founded in 1966 in Ottawa under the direction of Corvette Captain Alan Beddoe OC , OBE . The original name was Heraldry Society of Canada .
During the first 25 years, the Society was the driving force behind the establishment of a separate Canadian corporation for the granting and issuing of coats of arms . On June 4, 1988, Prince Edward presented the Letters Patent from Queen Elizabeth II in the governor's seat, authorizing the Governor General of Canada to grant coats of arms and to establish the Canadian heraldic authority, the Canadian Heraldic Authority , which is part of the Governor General . The first head of this agency and Chief Herald of Canada was the then President of the Heraldry Society, Robert Watt LVO .
On March 20, 2002, Elizabeth II raised the Society to a Royal Association for its golden jubilee and officially granted it the name Royal . The name change to the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada was officially announced at the General Assembly by Queen Iona Campagnolo's personal representative , Vice-Governor of the Province of British Columbia .
With the amendment of the statutes as a Royal Society , an application was also made to improve the coat of arms, so that from now on the royal crown could be used in the official coat of arms of the society. This privilege was granted by Elizabeth II by decree on December 18, 2003.
activities
The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada tries to promote interest in heraldry by offering a three-stage course (self-paced with reading instructions), the Heraldry Proficiency Course , and a computer program specifically aimed at children for creating a coat of arms ( Heraldry 4 Kids) on the homepage offers.
In addition, the society publishes a scientific journal, the Alta Studia Heraldica (ASH), and a quarterly membership magazine ( Heraldry in Canada / Gonfanon ). In addition, regional departments of the company publish quarterly magazines ( The Blazon in British Columbia / Yukon, The Prairie Tressure and Hogtown Heraldry ).
