Herbert Appel

Herbert Hans Karl August Appel (born March 28, 1907 in Spantekow near Anklam , Pomerania ; † 1993 ) was a German-Chilean chemist.

Life and activity

Appel was a son of the doctor Hans Appel and his wife Margarete, geb. Appel. From Easter 1916 to Easter 1925 he attended the Humanist High School in Anklam. He then worked for two years as a pharmacist intern in Anklam and one year as a pharmacist assistant in Cologne .

From the summer semester 1928 to the winter semester 1929/30 he studied chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Greifswald . In the summer semester he passed the first and in the winter semester 1929/30 the second association examination. In the summer semester of 1930 he passed the pharmaceutical state examination and then went to Leipzig, where he wrote his dissertation on the fermentation effects of emulsin under the supervision of Burckhardt Helferich .

Because of his Jewish ancestry, he left Germany in 1933. He first went to Switzerland and then to Birmingham in Great Britain.

In 1937 Appel moved to Chile, where he received a position as a lecturer at the Federico Santa Maria University of Technology . He stayed here for more than forty years, until his retirement in 1981. In addition to his research and teaching duties, he also performed administrative functions, such as dean of the Faculty of Chemistry (1944–1960) and director of the Graduate School (1960–1963). He was also a member of the Academy of Sciences of Chile and the Chilean Chemical Society.

In 1970 Appel was awarded the Chilean National Prize for Science (Premio Nacional de Ciencias de Chile).

1981 Appel retired, he in Vina del Mar spent.
