Herbert II (Maine)
Herbert II of Maine († March 9, 1062 ) was an Earl of Maine from the Second House of Maine since 1051 . He was the son and successor of Count Hugos IV and his wife Bertha von Blois († 1085).
After the death of his father in 1051, Herbert was still under the age of majority, which the actual ruler of Maine, Count Gottfried II Martel of Anjou , used as a pretext to legitimize his rule as guardian for Herbert, especially since Maine was formally a fiefdom of Anjou . But Herbert's mother and her children managed to escape from Le Mans to the court of the Norman Duke Wilhelm II (the later conqueror of England), who named himself Herbert's patron. In 1056 Herbert recognized the duke as his liege lord and achieved his sister's engagement to his eldest son Robert Kurzhose .
Herbert died soon after. With him ended the second Maine house (the Hugonids) in the male line. The struggle for supremacy in Maine would continue between Angevinen and Normans for the years to come. It took two generations with considerable disputes until a new dynasty, Gottfried Plantagenet, assumed permanent rule in 1126.
