Herbert James Draper
Herbert James Draper (* 1863 in London ; † 1920 ) was an English painter of the Victorian Age .
Life
After training at the Royal Academy of Arts , he went on several study trips to Paris and Rome from 1888 to 1892. In the 1890s he also worked as a book illustrator . In 1891 he married his wife Ida, with whom he had a daughter.
Draper's main creative period began in 1894, during which he mainly painted large-format themes from Greek mythology. His work The Lament for Icarus , created in 1898, was awarded the gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 .
Although Draper was neither a member nor an associate of the Royal Academy, he was involved in the exhibitions there every year from 1887 until shortly before his death. Draper enjoyed a good reputation during his lifetime; not least as a demanding portrait painter . In his final years, however, his fame faded.
