Herbert Leide

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herbert Leide (born April 3, 1930 ) is a former successful motorboat racing driver in the GDR .

The master mechanic Leide drove to motorboat races as a helper for several years. In 1956 he started for the first time with his own boat with a Wartburg engine in the E 01 class (sports boats with a standard inboard engine up to 900 cm³). In 1961 he switched to the faster OC class (racing boats with outboard engines up to 500 cm³). As a top athlete, he was able to take part in races in Germany and in western countries and secured some of his successes there. This changed when the GDR stopped supporting non-Olympic sports in 1972. From 1973 onwards, Leide no longer started. His son Frank, who had also started motorboat racing in 1972, stopped again in 1974 without any notable success.
