Herbert Schäfer (Designer)
Herbert Schäfer (* 1932 in Rauscha , Silesia) was a German designer. From 1972 to 1993 he was chief designer at Volkswagen and during this time he was responsible for the design of all Volkswagen cars .
Life
Herbert Schäfer is a trained Wagner and initially built carriages. At the beginning of the 1950s, many car bodies were made of wood and sheet metal. Schäfer's feeling for material and form developed while repairing vehicles from this time. In 1952, Schäfer passed the master craftsman's examination as a bodywork craftsman and then took his engineering examination at the bodywork college in Kaiserslautern.
He then worked at Auto Union in Ingolstadt and Düsseldorf, where he became head of design in the styling department , moved to Daimler-Benz and finally to Volkswagen in 1961 in Wolfsburg . In 1971 he was given responsibility for design in the research area, and since 1972 he has been the chief designer.
His design responsibility includes the phase of a fundamental renewal of the Volkswagen brand, starting with the VW Golf, a design by Giorgio Giugiaro that was revised in the Wolfsburg design department.
On the occasion of his departure in 1993, the FAZ wrote: "With the VW Polo, Golf and Passat, he probably influenced the image of European city centers and landscapes more than all architects on this continent with their static designs." solid, reliable and a bit boring ”, probably contributed to their success.
