from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Frederick Herbert Smith (born May 26, 1872 , † April 20, 1953 ) was a British mineralogist who was a curator at the British Museum (later the Natural History Museum London).

In 1897 he became assistant second class in the mineralogy department, in 1908 assistant first class, 1921 assistant secretary and 1931 secretary of the museum. Shortly before his retirement (1937) he became the head of the mineralogy department (Keeper of Mineralogy) in 1935.

He developed a refractometer for jewelers and discovered the mineral paratacamite (1905).

The green copper mineral Herbertsmithtite , discovered in Chile in 1972, is named after him.
